After more than 35 years of traveling across Africa, last week brought me to a destination I had surprisingly never explored before — Malawi. And what a hidden gem it turned out to be. Though new to me, Malawi is no stranger to Destination Africa. We’ve long partnered with top local operators to deliver unforgettable journeys in the Warm Heart of Africa.
For many, Malawi travel remains a mystery. It’s a country few know much about, often overshadowed by its larger neighbours. Yet from the moment I arrived, it was clear why Malawi is called “The Warm Heart of Africa.” I have always said that happiness lives in Africa, but in Malawi, the smiles are truly everywhere.
Malawi is a landlocked country in Southern Africa with a complex past. Years ago, much of its wildlife was lost due to poaching, largely driven by conflict spilling over from neighbouring Mozambique. But the resilience of Malawi is inspiring. Thanks to the ongoing efforts of African Parks and other conservation partners, Malawi’s national parks and reserves are experiencing a powerful comeback. Majestic wildlife is returning. Nature is healing.

The crown jewel of the country is Lake Malawi — a massive, freshwater lake that stretches like an inland ocean. When I shared photos during my visit, friends and colleagues kept asking, “Where is that?” Most assumed it was an Indian Ocean island. Little did they know I was standing on the shores of one of Africa’s greatest natural wonders, right in the continent’s heart.
In the years ahead, I hope to introduce many more of our clients, partners, and friends to this extraordinary destination. Malawi offers not only breathtaking landscapes and a revitalized wilderness, but also some of the friendliest, most welcoming people in Africa.
