From Nairobi to the Nation of Possibility – South Africa

This South Africa trip changed me – here’s why.

A Kenyan Traveller in South Africa

Culture, connections & the spirit of a rising nation

Touching down in Johannesburg felt like stepping into the beating heart of the continent. Our adventure began upon arrival at OR Tambo, after a seemingly quick 5 hour flight from Nairobi In the exceptional Business class flight by Kenya Airways (The Pride of Africa) and we’re swiftly and comfortably transferred to our accommodation at Southern Sun Rosebank (10/10 hotel and this applies to the whole Southern Sun collective of hotels) where Ian and I settled in quickly before taking a gentle spin around the stylish Rosebank district. Dinner and cold brew at News café set the tone – warm hospitality, great music, and unmistakable Jozi energy.

Soweto: Stories of struggle, triumph, and unbreakable spirit

Day 2 took us deep into the soul of South Africa. Antoinette Sithole, our Soweto guides Lebo and Lerato delivered a tour that was less of a sightseeing experience and more of a powerful walk through history equal parts entertaining, insightful, inspiring and tragic/emotionally intense. From Vilakazi Street to the Hector Pieterson Memorial, every corner echoed with resilience and a spirit of evolution that could not be tamed despite immense attacks on their livelihoods and all round well-being. You could feel the weight of sacrifices that paved the way for South Africa’s freedom – yet, at the same time, the vibrant joy of a people who refuse to be defined by hardship. It is no surprise that it was in this neighbourhood that the iconic heroes Nelson Mandela, Bishop Desmond Tutu and a wave of African freedom fighters arose from here.

The evening slowed into an elegant exploration of Sandton, where Africa’s economic pulse beats loudest. Glass towers, luxury boutiques and buzzing streets painted a sharp, fascinating contrast to the earlier historical immersion.

Sun City: Royalty, relaxation & pure Fun

The next two days took us to Sun City, the desert oasis that never disappoints. Between world-class resorts, adventure activities, and the rhythm of leisure, it was easy to forget the rest of the world existed. Sun City offered premium content in every sense, laughter-filled moments, golden sunsets over the Pilanesberg, poolside storytelling, and the kind of bonding that only travel can forge.

Cape Town: Innovation, culture & the unfiltered beauty of the south

We flew into the embrace of Cape Town’s mountains and oceans. The welcome was pure fire,  a VIP Rands experience in Khayelitsha, where we found raw creativity, fearless fashion, and township vibrance that deserves global recognition.

Abi our guide received us and whisked us off at 11 for an unforgettable Cape Winelands Tour. Stellenbosch charmed everyone with its wine estates, winding vineyards and serene ambience. The overnight stay was bliss. And performing the ‘Sabre’ on a brand new bottle of wine and the Simonsig Wine Estate was a view to behold!! Shout out to to Simonsig for the exceptional service and dedication to winecraft

  • The following days unfolded like scenes from a cinematic love letter to Cape Town
  • Leisure at the V&A Waterfront, with its performers, sea breezes and eclectic mix of global and African culture.
  • A Cape Town City Tour and the iconic Table Mountain, revealing views that make you feel as if the world is within reach.
  • And of course, the Cape Point Tour, where oceans collide dramatically and nature shows off without apology.
Connections that stayed with us

One of the trip’s unexpected highlights was the breadth of people we met – entrepreneurs, artists, business moguls, innovators, community leaders, dreamers and doers. Each encounter revealed something new about South Africa’s dynamism. Conversations stretched from the legacy of the struggle to the future of African innovation.

Lunch with Christo was another standout moment – equal parts insightful, inspiring, emotionally triggering and delicious (Best fresh fish and chips I’ve had!!)

And the nights? World-class. The energy was magnetic. The dancing? Let’s just say South Africans move like their rhythms were engineered by the ancestors. It was vibrant, joyous, and absolutely unforgettable.

Conclusion: South Africa – A beacon of culture & courage

By the time we transferred back to Cape Town International for our flight home to Nairobi, one truth was undeniable: South Africa is a global cultural powerhouse. A country shaped by painful histories yet propelled by creativity, resilience and unstoppable ambition. Its landscapes are breath-taking, its communities endlessly innovative, and its spirit – unbreakable.

South Africa stands as a proud champion of Africa’s beauty, potential and profound legacy. And this journey was more than a trip; it was a reminder of the greatness that rises when a people refuse to let their past define their future.

A heartfelt thank you to Kenya Airways and Destination Africa  and Christ Twhala – Destination Specialist for making this unforgettable journey possible. Winning the lucky draw at the Sarit Expo was a complete surprise –  but what followed was beyond anything I could have imagined. Kenya Airways provided a smooth, comfortable flight, and Destination Africa curated an experience that was seamless, enriching and truly memorable.

Special thanks also to the team at Simonsig Wine Estate for the warm welcome, incredible hospitality, and that unforgettable sabrage moment – popping a bottle with a sword while overlooking the vineyards was the kind of magic you never forget. Thank you all for turning this opportunity into something extraordinary.
