Chasing the Great Migration – Kenya’s epic wildlife journey

At Destination Africa, we specialise in crafting unforgettable travel experiences and you will agree that the Great Migration is a must-see wildlife spectacle.

The Great Migration is often referred to as the “World Cup of Wildlife.” Each year, millions of wildebeest, accompanied by thousands of zebras and gazelles, make the perilous trek from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Kenya’s Maasai Mara and back again. This journey, driven by the instinctive search for greener pastures and water, spans approximately 1 800 miles (nearly 3 000 kilometers) and is fraught with danger, with predators like lions, cheetahs and crocodiles around every corner.

The migration is a year-round phenomenon, but the most dramatic events occur between July and October and this is the best time to plan a trip. During this period, the herds cross the treacherous Mara River in Kenya, where they face the lurking predators and swift currents.
