Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

At a glance

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of Uganda’s most important natural attractions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its ancient rainforest and mountain gorilla population.

Located along the edge of the Rift Valley, the park spans over 32,000 hectares of dense forest that has remained largely unchanged for thousands of years. Its significance lies in both its ecological age and biodiversity, with hundreds of plant species, tree varieties, and ferns forming a complex and layered ecosystem.

Bwindi is globally recognised for protecting nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Several habituated groups allow for controlled tracking, making the park one of the few places where these primates can be observed in their natural environment.

Beyond gorillas, the forest supports a wide range of wildlife, including primates, forest elephants, antelope species, and an exceptional diversity of birdlife, particularly within the Albertine Rift.

Itinerary Value

Bwindi is a flagship attraction of Uganda, often forming the primary focus of travel to the country.

For trade, it delivers a high-value, permit-driven experience that positions Uganda strongly within the East African safari offering. It pairs well with destinations such as Queen Elizabeth National Park or Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, allowing for broader regional itineraries.

Its combination of wildlife rarity, conservation importance, and cultural context makes it one of the most distinct and meaningful inclusions in an African itinerary.
